Our Mission: The
ship's name, GETTYSBURG, commemorates the pivotal battle
of the American Civil War fought from July 1 through July
3, 1863. As were the soldiers of both armies engaged at
Gettysburg battle ready, so too is the namesake of this
famous battle prepared to cope with any tasking.
USS GETTYSBURG (CG 64) and her sister ships are
designed to protect carrier battle-groups from all
threats - air, surface, or subsurface - while being
capable of striking land targets. GETTYSBURG's primary
mission is to be prepared to conduct prompt, sustained
combat operations at sea in support of a carrier battle
group or amphibious assault group, protecting those
groups from saturation attacks and contributing to power
projection ashore.
